SMOALD / About
// About

I'm Joshua Kay. I build the whole thing myself.

SMOALD is my business — a UK sole trader, not an agency. When you email, I'm the one who reads it, and I'm the one who writes the code afterwards.

What I actually do

I build websites and web applications, and I handle everything underneath them — domains, DNS, SSL certificates, hosting and deployment. That last part matters more than it sounds. A lot of developers will build you a beautiful site and then email you a folder of files, leaving you to work out why your domain doesn't point at it or why browsers are warning visitors away. I'd rather just do that part properly.

Most of my work is in Python and Flask for applications, and plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript for websites where a heavy framework would only slow things down. Infrastructure runs on Cloudflare because it's fast, it's secure by default, and for most small business sites it's free.

How I work with AI

I use AI coding tools as part of how I build. I'd rather say that plainly than have you wonder.

What it means in practice: a one-person business can ship at a pace that used to need a small team. What it doesn't mean is code nobody has read. Everything I hand over is reviewed, tested and deployed by someone who understands every line of it — which is exactly why ThaiBridge AI has 1,523 automated tests behind it rather than a hope that it works. AI is a tool I'm good with, the same way I'm good with a terminal. It isn't a substitute for knowing what you're doing.

Where I'm up to

I'm honest about this: I'm early in my freelance career. I have one real website delivered for somebody else's business — I modernised a friend's honey farm website, which I did without charging — and a substantial web application of my own that's live, with its payment and cancellation flow proven end to end.

What I don't have yet is a long list of paying clients, and I'm not going to invent one. What I do have is work you can click on, code you can read, and a stack of projects I finished rather than abandoned. Judge me on those.

What you get that an agency won't give you

  • The person who answers is the person who builds. Nothing gets relayed through an account manager or passed to a junior.
  • A fixed price before I start. Not an hourly bill that grows quietly.
  • You own everything at the end. The code, the copyright, and the accounts holding your domain and hosting.
  • Straight answers. Including when the honest answer is that you need less than you asked for, or that I'm not the right person for the job.

What I'm building

SMOALD stands for Smart, Bold, AI, Lifestyle and Development. Web development is the part that's open for business today, and it's what pays for the rest. Beyond it there's ThaiBridge AI, a live language-learning app with real accounts, subscriptions and an AI tutor, built in public with the journals to show for it.

I'm also currently studying Meta's Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate, which will eventually let me offer marketing alongside the development work. I'll say so here when that's ready rather than before.
